CCBC Editorial Policy

This policy is designed to set intentions and guidelines for the Canadian Children’s Book Centre’s published content. All published content should support our Statement of Commitment (see below). The CCBC Editorial Policy will be posted on the CCBC and the Book News websites. In addition, a disclaimer will be included at the bottom of all book creator interviews and will link to the CCBC Editorial Policy. 

The CCBC Editorial Policy applies to CCBC-created and third-party created content (interviews, articles, and posts) on Canadian Children’s Book News or the Canadian Children’s Book Centre’s communication channels, including, but not limited to, bookcentre.ca, kidsbooknews.ca, CCBC newsletter, and social media channels.

·        When creating content, the CCBC staff and contract team take every step to ensure accuracy and clarity.  

·        We will ensure that content is created and curated by human experts and that articles, book lists, resources, etc. are not AI generated.

·        In CCBC curated book lists, we will use publisher’s book descriptions to accurately represent title information.

·        We will not represent another person’s original creative work as our own.

·        We will include diverse voices in our content and seek those with lived experiences to share their stories, cultures, and views.

·        When content draws upon or is inspired by real cultures and history it will be done respectfully and authentically.

·        Excerpts from other people’s work will be attributed.

• Quotation marks will be used to indicate that what is printed between them is what was said. 
• Ellipses will be used within quotations to indicate that words have been removed. 
• Information from other publications/sources will be checked and credited when used.

·        When publishing content that is created by contributors who are not under contract with the CCBC, the editorial team will:

o   print the content as submitted, unless it is deemed to include hate speech, discrimination or personal attacks that hurt the reputation of the community and/or the CCBC.

o   fix errors in grammar or pronunciation, but the changes will be minimal and not alter meaning.

·        When corrections are required to content posted on our websites, they will be made immediately after an error is found.

·        Should content need to be reviewed, an ad hoc committee of the CCBC Board of Directors will be formed, undertake the review, and submit recommendations the CCBC staff in a timely manner.

 

Statement of Commitment

The Canadian Children’s Book Centre (CCBC) serves the Canadian children’s book community. We believe in and uphold the rights to freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression that are protected under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. As an organization that champions Canadian arts and culture, the CCBC has an obligation to defend these rights and to advance diversity and inclusion in the many ways they intersect with our mission and activities. This includes defending people’s right to engage in speech that may not align to our personal or organizational values.
