Organized by British Columbia’s Young Readers’ Choice Awards Society, the fiction and non-fiction winners of the Red Cedar Book Awards were announced on May 19. The goal of the program is to encourage students in Grades 4-7 to read more, to create an awareness of Canadian books and authors, and to develop a reader’s ability to judge published works. Kenneth Oppel's Silverwing: The Graphic Novel, with illustrations by Christopher Steininger (HarperCollins Publishers), took home the fiction honour. The winner in the non-fiction category is Alone: The Journeys of Three Young Refugees, written by Paul Tom, illustrated by Mélanie Baillairgé, and translated by Arielle Aaronson (Groundwood Books).
