
Earlier this month, the Alcuin Society announced the winners of the 42nd Alcuin Society’s Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada. A total of 228 submissions from 81 Canadian publishers were considered. The jury was comprised of book designers Donna Braggins, Bryan Gee and Shelley Gruendler.
The winners and honourable mentions in the children's picture books category are listed below. John Martz, Senior Designer at Tundra Book Group, also took home the top prize in the comics/graphic novel category for his work on the YA graphic novel The Gulf by Adam de Souza (Tundra Books).

First Place:
Sara Gillingham, designer of Mushrooms Know: Wisdom From Our Friends the Fungi, written by Kallie George, illustrated by Sara Gillingham (Greystone Kids)
Second Place:
Barb Kelly, designer of Mad at Dad, written and illustrated by Janie Hao (Kids Can Press)
Third Place:
John Martz, designer of A Face Is a Poem, written and illustrated by Julie Morstad (Tundra Books)
Honourable Mentions:
Michael Solomon, designer of Boozhoo! / Hello!, written and illustrated by Mangeshig Pawis-Steckley (Groundwood Books)
Sophie Paas-Lang, designer of Towed by Toad, written and illustrated by Jashar Awan (Tundra Books)
Rachel Nam, designer of Bog Myrtle, written and illustrated by Sid Sharp (Annick Press)
The books will be exhibited across Canada at Simon Fraser University, University of Victoria, University of Alberta, Arts & Letters Club of Toronto, Toronto Metropolitan University, National Gallery of Canada, Arts in Muskoka, McGill University, Université de Québec à Montréal, and NSCAD University. They will also be sent to Germany where they will be exhibited at the Frankfurt Bookfair and the Leipzig Bookfair and entered in the Siftung Buchkunst’s international book design competition.
