"In this time of "elbows up" and "Canada Strong" the public's appetite for all things Canadian is experiencing a wonderful surge,” said Stephanie Wells, CCBC Executive Director. "We have been working to ensure Canadian books for children and teens are discovered, read, and celebrated for 50 years. The landscape for reviews and articles on Canadian children’s books shrinks every year, so it seemed critical that we remove paywalls to provide all Canadians access to our resources. At kidsbooknews.ca, everyone will be able to discover the incredible range of books published by Canadians each year. All our bookshelves, whether they are in schools, in libraries, in bookstores or at home, should be brimming with Canadian books."
Each year, Book News features over 150 reviews and recommendations of recently published Canadian books for children and teens. The reviews also span different genres, age groups and themes, while profiles of authors and illustrators raise awareness of the creative community behind the books. Book News helps Canadian books find a broader audience and is read by teachers, librarians, parents, and family and friends of young people. Canadian authors, illustrators and publishers also use the articles and reviews to promote their titles.
When choosing books to review, stories to highlight, and creators to spotlight, the CCBC is committed to including a wide range of voices and stories, with an eye to ensuring we include those that may have been historically excluded. Likewise, we select titles from as many publishers as possible—big and small, from all regions—and cover all genres. We make a point to include books from small presses whose titles are often overlooked. Book News is often the only Canadian publication in which many books will ever receive a review.
About Canadian Children’s Book News
Published since 1977, Book News is recognized for its quality book reviews, author and illustrator interviews, annotated reading lists and informative articles that update readers about issues affecting children's reading and education, as well as the Canadian children's publishing industry. No other Canadian publication promotes the best in Canadian children's literature while elevating the profile to Canadian authors, illustrators and publishers. Our Book News editor coordinates with publishers, authors and illustrators and assigns articles and reviews to a wide range of paid freelance writers and reviewers.
About the Canadian Children's Book Centre
The Canadian Children's Book Centre was formed in 1976 with the belief that all Canadians should have the opportunity to read books created by Canadian authors and illustrators. Fifty years later, we are still guided by this same belief. Since our founding, we’ve become a key player in the growing world of Canadian children’s books. Each of our programs are accessible across Canada, reaching cities and remote communities alike.
