A fundraiser that invites all Canadians to build an essential reading list of books for kids and teens!

In honour of its 50th anniversary, the Canadian Children’s Book Centre (CCBC) recently released the ultimate picture book list: 50 Must Read Canadian Picture Books: Recommended by the CCBC in Celebration of our 50th Anniversary, which features its team's selection of 50 top picture books that have shaped them and the CCBC across decades. Middle grade and YA lists will be released later this year.

Stephanie Wells, CCBC Executive Director, shares:

“We have enjoyed seeing everyone's excitement, comments, and opinions about our selections. These were just some of our favourites among the many out there, but we know that you have your top picks as well, and we want to hear about them!

For 50 years, the CCBC has uplifted Canadian authors and illustrators. Thoughtful consideration, curiosity, and conversation about kids' books are just some of the ways the CCBC actively creates space for Canadian children’s literature to be discovered and celebrated, and we hope to continue that for many years to come, with your help. Which is why we are inviting everyone to participate in our new campaign: Canada’s Favourite Kids’ Books.

Through a ‘donate to nominate fundraiser,’ participants will get to nominate up to four Canadian kids’ books (for ages 0-18). You have seen some of our choices and now is the time to share your favourite books with us! Did you agree with any on our list? What books do you always recommend to family and friends? Which stories have had a lasting impact on your life? Were you a library kid? Do you read to your children or grandchildren? We want to hear from everyone!”

Over the next few months, the CCBC will gather votes and in January 2027 they will share a list of beloved books, compiled by the CCBC, but created by everyone!”

The nomination process is simple:

  1. Visit the Canada’s Favourite Kids’ Books Campaign
  2. Make a Donation
  3. Nominate up to four favourite Canadian kids’ books (for ages 0-18)
  4. Share your votes on your social media platforms (if you have them) and encourage others to vote as well! Tag @kidsbookcentre and use #CDNFavKidsBooks

The Canadian Children’s Book Centre is encouraging nation-wide participation from the book community and beyond. They will be harnessing this campaign to start conversations on the importance of Canadian stories, building a culture of reading for young people, and to raise much-needed funds to support CCBC programs and activities.
