Biography

Alina Pete is a nehiyaw artist and writer from Little Pine First Nation in Saskatchewan. They grew up urban but spent summers wandering in the Qu’Appelle Valley with their cousins from Cowessess First Nation. Alina is best known for their award–winning comics, but they also write short stories and poems, and their work has been featured in several Indigenous comic anthologies. They are the creator and editor of the comics anthology Indiginerds: Tales from Modern Indigenous Life. Alina lives on unceded Kwantlen, Katzie, Semiahmoo and Tsawwassen land with their partner.

Join Alina Pete, author and editor of the book Indiginerds: Tales from Modern Indigenous Life, as they talk about all the ways Indigenous people blend tradition and pop culture. From using video games to teach language skills, building cultural spaces in VR or battling depression in D&D, Indiginerds show that Indigenous people are still here and still building their own spaces in pop culture. Alina will guide the class through a roundtable chat about good and bad representation in media, and talk about the importance of

Lost at Windy River: Using Indigenous know-how to survive a blizzard! 

Target audience: Grades 1 – 4

Preferred group size: 20-30 students

Maximum group size: 40 students

Wonder how Ilse Schweder, a 12-year old Indigenous girl, survived when she got lost in the wilds? Alina Pete, an Indigenous artist from Litle Pine First Nation and illustrator of Lost at Windy River, will talk about how Indigenous knowledge teaches how to survive and keep hope in your heart even in the toughest of times. Then, Alina will lead the class through a guessing game of animal tracks, and tell a story about how one of Coyote’s tricks can lead you straight to the North Star!
