FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: (February 1, 2025)—IBBY Canada (International Board on Books for Young People, Canadian section) is pleased to announce that author David A. Robertson and illustrator Josée Bisaillon are Canada’s nominees for the 2026 Hans Christian Andersen Awards.
Author nominee David A. Robertson tells stories from an Indigenous perspective about matters of Indigenous identity, language, history, and belonging. His bestselling books for children of all ages have been recognized by the highest literary awards in Canada, including the Governor General’s Literary Award for Young People’s Literature—Illustrated Books for When We Were Alone and On the Trapline and the prestigious TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award for On the Trapline. Robertson also spearheads a newly created imprint at Tundra Books (Penguin Random House Canada), dedicated to publishing Indigenous authors and illustrators.
Lesley Clement, chair of IBBY Canada’s HCA Award Nomination Committee writes, “Robertson’s legacy promises to extend well into the future. As Cherie Dimaline observes in her essay for the award nomination dossier, ‘Robertson has already changed the world for the next generation of readers, not just the literary world or the landscape of available books, but an entire outlook on life and imagining of what is possible.'
Illustrator nominee Josée Bisaillon has illustrated over 35 picture books for children. Her art has won the Prix illustration du Salon du livre de Trois-Rivières twice, for both Ma tête en l’air and Monsieur Tralalère. She has also won the prestigious Marilyn Baillie Picture Book Award for The Snow Knows with author Jennifer McGrath, and been named a finalist for the Governor General’s Literary Award for Young People’s Literature—Illustrated Books three times. In 2018, Bisaillon published her first picture book as an author-illustrator, Reviens sur terre Esther!
In endorsing the nomination, Pol Turgeon, renown Quebec teacher, illustrator and artist writes: “I remember very well Josee’s fervent passion for illustration and her desire to create images that would be very personal to her […] Watching her work is an exercise in humility and curiosity. Seeing the reach of her work from the personal to the international is both inspiring and highly commendable.”
Bestowed biennially, the Hans Christian Andersen Awards are internationally recognized as the highest honour for creators of children’s and youth literature. The Andersen Awards, known as the “little Nobel,” were established in 1956 to recognize authors and illustrators around the world whose complete works have made a lasting and significant contribution to children’s literature.
Each of the International Board on Books for Young People’s 80 national sections is invited to nominate candidates for the Hans Christian Andersen Awards. An international jury of distinguished children’s literature specialists selects the winners. Nominees are evaluated on qualities of their work including aesthetic and literary merit, the ability to stretch children’s curiosity and imagination, diversity of expression, and the continued relevance of the works to children and young people.
The 2026 Hans Christian Andersen Awards will be presented at the 40th IBBY World Congress to be held in Ottawa, Ontario, August 6-9, 2026.

Décernés tous les deux ans, les Prix Hans Christian Andersen sont internationalement reconnus comme la plus haute distinction pour les créateur·rice·s de littérature jeunesse. Établis en 1956, les Prix Andersen, surnommés les « petits Nobel », honorent les auteur·e·s et illustrateur·rice·s du monde entier dont l’œuvre complète a apporté une contribution durable et significative à la littérature jeunesse.
Chaque section nationale des 80 sections d’IBBY est invitée à nommer des candidat·e·s pour les Prix Hans Christian Andersen. Un jury international composé de spécialistes éminent·e·s de la littérature jeunesse sélectionne les lauréat·e·s. Les candidat·e·s sont évalué·e·s selon des qualités de leur œuvre, y compris le mérite esthétique et littéraire, leur capacité à éveiller la curiosité et l’imagination des enfants, la diversité des expressions et la pertinence continue de leurs œuvres pour les jeunes lecteur·rice·s.
Les Prix Hans Christian Andersen 2026 seront remis lors du 40e Congrès mondial d’IBBY, qui se tiendra à Ottawa, en Ontario, du 6 au 9 août 2026.
