William Toye (1926-2024)
It is with great sadness that we share with you the passing of William Toye on May 1. After graduating with a journalism degree from the University of Toronto, Toye started his career in publishing in 1948 at the Canadian division of Oxford University Press. He worked for the press in various roles—warehouse clerk, production manager, designer and eventually editorial director—before retiring in 1991. Toye was also a children's book author, working with illustrators like Lazlo Gal and Elizabeth Cleaver to create titles like Cartier Discovers the St. Lawrence (Oxford University Press, 1970) and The Loon's Necklace (Oxford University Press, 1977) to name just two. In 1993, Toye was awarded the Order of Canada.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends.
