Raina Delisle's Breaking News wins 2024 Victoria Children's Book Prize
The winners of the 2024 Butler Book Prize and the City of Victoria Children’s Book Prize were announced on Wednesday evening at the Union Club of British Columbia during the annual Victoria Book Prizes Gala. Victoria author Raina Delisle was awarded the City of Victoria Children’s Book Prize for her non-fiction book, Breaking News: Why Media Matters (Orca Book Publishers). Delisle receives $5,000 as part of the award. The jury citation is below.
Jury citation: "Engaging and accessible from the first page to the last, Breaking News: Why Media Matters offers a comprehensive look at how journalism shapes our world. This profound little book with big personality is essential reading for a future of responsible media consumers and creators."
The four remaining finalists are:
- Maybe a Whale, illustrated by Crystal Smith, written by Kirsten Pendreigh (Groundwood Books)
- Out of the Dark, written by Julie Lawson (Nimbus Publishing)
- Pine Island Visitors, written by Polly Horvath (Puffin Canada)
- Shamus the Urban Rez Dog, P.I., written by Leslie Gentile (DCB Young Readers)
