Presentation Information:
Workshop #1 (Kindergarten-Grade 3; 55 minutes)
Using a PowerPoint presentation on a large screen I will give an overview of the writing and editing process for creating a picture book.
Keeping in mind the age of my audience, I will incorporate music, movement and audience participation. We will experiment with beat, rhythm and rhyme in a fun and interactive discussion on writing in rhyme.
I will read 3 of my latest picture books aloud, displaying the illustrations on a large screen for every student to enjoy. I will engage the young audience in a discussion on social-emotional literacy topics including the social skill of entering play, bully awareness and resiliency in school.
There will be a question-and-answer period to wrap up.
Workshop #2 (Grades 4-8; 55 minutes)
Using a PowerPoint presentation on a large screen I will discuss idea generation, and writing and editing techniques for creating a picture book.
I will encourage the audience to consider creating their own 5-minute story, which is intended to sound good when read out loud. We will examine how to choose the audience and the delivery when creating a story.
I will read 3 of my latest picture books aloud, displaying the illustrations on a large screen for every student to enjoy. In addition to examining the structure of each story, we will engage in a discussion on the emotional impact of each book’s topics when considering bully awareness, resilience in school and establishing positive mental health routines.
I will wrap up with a question-answer period.
