How You Can Help the CCBC – A resource for educators

If you are a teacher or librarian, you likely have the same mission as the CCBC. You understand the importance of high-quality literature, and you know how critical exposure to reading is for children, both young and old.

There are so many wonderful benefits of casual reading. But there are a few key reasons why we think reading is absolutely essential for children, and those are:

  • it sparks innovation
  • inspires critical thinking
  • shapes long-term interests
  • fuels creativity and imagination
  • teaches children a variety of topics, possibly not learned in school
  • it will help kids score an A+ on their future English essays

If you agree with us, we need your help! The CCBC has always looked to represent the current values of teachers, parents, educators and children, through carefully curated Canadian literature. We want to continue to reach Canadians across the country and continue to spark a love of reading through our programs and initiatives. If you believe in our mission and want to support the CCBC, there are a few ways you can help. Here is a list of activities you can do to help the CCBC this year:

  1. Host a read-a-thon

Get your pals together and create a list of Canadian children’s books to read this year. Make sure everyone has a copy of the list so they can stay on track. There are many online templates you can use to inspire your read-a-thon! Just like with any marathon, participants can challenge themselves and fundraise funds for the CCBC, helping schools in remote communities have the chance to meet an author or illustrator.

  1. Hold a book giveaway inspired by the CCBC

If you are feeling extra generous, consider hosting a book giveaway through social media! Support the CCBC by using Canadian books recommended in Canadian Children’s Book News, Best Books for Kids & Teens or on our website!

  1. Follow us on social media

The CCBC’s social media accounts are the best way to keep up-to-date on our programs. Follow us, share our posts and engage with our hashtag #ChooseCanadianBooks year round!

  1. Join Red Apple Reading

The CCBC created Red Apple Reading on Facebook to unite CanLit lovers across the country. If you are an educator or librarian join our discussion. We want to hear what you have to say about the latest news in Canadian book publishing!

  1. Host a writing competition

There is no better way to inspire young readers and writers than to host a writing (or illustration) competition! At your school or library, organize a writing competition for the young or old. Pick a theme, find some judges and set a date! This way you can engage with your local community and further the love of reading. Make sure to tag us on social media so we can keep up with your competition!

  1. Hold a CanLit costume party

If you really want to have some fun, host a Canadian literature costume party! At work, have everyone pick a character from Canadian literature and dress up as them for a day. This can be for Halloween or just for fun! (P.S. not everyone can be Anne of Green Gables!!) This is also a great way to raise money, by having all participants donate $1 for the chance to dress up.

  1. Host a literary scavenger hunt

At your school or library, plan and host a scavenger hunt. Have your contestants locate Canadian children’s books on a list made by you. The first one to locate the majority of the books is the winner. If you can, find a grand prize for the winner to really get readers interested!

  1. Become a member

I know you have heard this one before, but becoming a member is the most effective way to support the CCBC! The membership fees go towards furthering #CanadianChildrenBookWeek, and the Grade One Book Giveaway, two of the largest children’s book initiatives in Canada! There are both individual and corporate levels you can choose from. To learn more about where your donations and membership money go, click here.

Thank you for your interest in the CCBC and our mission to support Canadian children’s literature. The CCBC has been over 40 years in the making and we could never have made it this far without your support! Our goal is to continue our literary initiatives and reach new audiences across the country. Consider hosting one of the listed activities to support the CCBC and help us reach our goals this year.

We really appreciate it!
