FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Vancouver, BC, May 16, 2023 — The judging committee has stopped giggling long enough to announce the two winning books for the 2023 Joan Betty Stuchner — Oy Vey! — Funniest Children’s Book Award.
In the picture or board book category, the winner is Quiet, Please! written and illustrated by Russ Willms, published by Orca Book Publishers.
In the chapter book category, the winner is Weenie Frank and Beans: Mad About Meatloaf! written by Maureen Fergus, illustrated by Alexandra Bye, published by Tundra Books.
The winners were announced via Zoom Extravaganza on Frog Jumping Day (May 13, 2023).
Every two years, two prizes of $752.81 are awarded to the Canadian books for children that tickled the judges’ funny bones the most.

Joan Betty Stuchner was a children’s author who loved to make people laugh. She passed away unexpectedly in 2014. The Joan Betty Stuchner — Oy Vey! — Funniest Children’s Book Award honours her warm and generous spirit by encouraging authors and illustrators to keep her life-affirming humour alive.
