The Heritage and History Book Awards are sponsored by the Historic Sites Association and administered by the Writers’ Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador (WANL). The Awards alternate between a work of fiction and children’s/young adult literature in one year, and non-fiction and poetry the next. The award recognizes work that exemplifies excellence in the interpretation of the history and heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The event took place at the historic Newman Wine Vaults in St. John’s and was emceed by author, and newly elected president of the board of WANL, Chad Pelley. The audience were treated to readings by five of the shortlisted authors. The shortlist also included: Dawn Baker (A Newfoundland Christmas), Andy Jones, (Jack and the Manger), Kevin Major (New Under the Sun), and Agnes Walsh (Answer Me Home).

For the first time in the eight-year history of these annual awards, two prizes were awarded, one in each category.

“The Writers’ Alliance is very pleased to partner with the Historic Sites Association in the presentation of these awards. That the prize money and awards were doubled this year attests to the quality and quantity of books by writers exploring their culture and heritage in this province,” said Alison Dyer, WANL’s Interim Executive Director. “The jury’s task of choosing two winners from among these deserving titles must have been difficult.”

The judges for this year included members of the Historic Sites Association’s board of directors: Joan Ritcey, LeeAnn Montgomery, Jeannie House, Terry Bishop Stirling, and Sharon Outerbridge.
