Saturday, November 30, 2013 would have marked the 139th birthday of L.M. Montgomery, author of Anne of Green Gables. This Canadian classic has endured for over 100 years because of Anne. Montgomery’s Anne Shirley is absolutely endearing. The freckled, red-headed eleven year old orphan has captivated audiences because of her plucky personality, gift of gab and ability to get into trouble just as quickly as she gets out of it. Anne is self-assured some moments and insecure others. She’s stubborn yet obliging. Lady-like yet a bit unrefined. And to top it all off, she’s a really bad speller. Simply put, she’s real. Therein lies Anne’s real appeal — her authenticity. The reader is completely and wholeheartedly able to not only understand her, but relate to her and her adventures. Celebrate what would have been Montgomery’s 139th birthday with one of her classic Anne novels.
