His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, recently announced 100 new appointments to the Order of Canada. The new list includes four people involved in the children’s book industry:
Jan Andrews, C.M.
For her contributions to Canadian culture as a children’s book author and as a pioneer of Canada’s storytelling movement.
Deborah Ellis, C.M., O.Ont.
For her acclaimed work as a young adult author and for her philanthropic support of many humanitarian causes.
Jacqueline Guest, C.M.
For her contributions as a children’s book author who promotes multiculturalism, youth literacy and Indigenous culture.
Annabel Slaight, C.M., O.Ont.
Roche’s Point, Ontario
For nurturing a passion for science and nature among generations of Canadian children.

Created in 1967, the Order of Canada, one of our country’s highest civilian honours, recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation. Close to 7 000 people from all sectors of society have been invested into the Order. Their contributions are varied, yet they have all enriched the lives of others and have taken to heart the motto of the Order: DESIDERANTES MELIOREM PATRIAM (“They desire a better country”).
