First Book Canada to Distribute 17,000 Books to Children in Need Across Alberta

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Calgary, AB (March 12, 2012) – Starting today and for the rest of this week, First Book Canada will distribute more than 17,000 books to children in need from communities across Alberta.

Schools and programs receiving books include local Calgary organizations, as well as groups from as far away as Lac La Biche, Edmonton, Hinton, and Lethbridge, Alberta. The books were donated by Simon and Schuster Canada, Georgetown Warehouse Terminals Ltd, Raincoast Books and The Canadian Children’s Book Centre.

“This donation of new books to children throughout the province of Alberta is important to our company and to me personally,” said Kevin Hanson, president of Simon and Schuster Canada, which is donating books to First Book Canada for the first time this week. “I grew up in rural Alberta and know that for so many of these children it will be the very first books they will actually will own and will be an important start to building their own libraries.”

John Sawyer, CEO at Raincoast Books said: “Instilling the love of reading amongst disadvantaged youth in Alberta is going to take committed partners, time, money and a long-term vision. Raincoast is very pleased to be working with our partners in the First Book distribution project as this is exactly the kind of work that can make a real difference.”

“This is our fifth time distributing books in Calgary, bringing high-quality, new books to children who otherwise would not be able to have books of their own,” said Tom Best, executive director of First Book Canada. “Thanks to the generosity of publishers like Simon and Schuster, GTW and Raincoast and the help of hard-working local volunteers, we will have distributed more than 132,000 books to children from low-income families in Alberta in the past three years.”

“We were thrilled to partner again with Neighbourlink Calgary, a group that clearly understands the enormous needs in our society and plays such a vital role lending a helping hand in the Calgary community,” said Best.
