Call for Submissions – 2011 R. Ross Annett Award for Children’s Literature

The Writers Guild of Alberta is now accepting submissions for the R. Ross Annett Award for Children’s Literature. This award was established in 1982 in honour of children’s author Ronald Ross Annett (1895-1988) and recognizes the author of a children’s picture book published in 2009 or 2010 and submitted to this province wide competition. The award alternates each year between picture books and chapter books. A $1,500 prize will be awarded to the winning author.

Submission Guidelines and Rules

  • Authors must have been a resident of Alberta for a minimum of twelve of the eighteen months prior to December 31 of 2010.
  • All entries must have been published or produced anywhere in the world between January 1, 2009 and December 31 of 2010.
  • Works not eligible for this award are: unpublished manuscripts, and multi-author anthologies.
  • The Awards Committee reserves the right to place a book in a category other than the R. Ross Annett Award for Children’s Literature if deemed appropriate. The organization or individual entering the book will be notified of such changes.
  • If, in the opinion of the judges, no work in the R. Ross Annett Award for Children’s Literature category merits an award, no award will be given. In all cases, the judges’ decision is final.

Submission Procedures

  • Entries must be mailed to the Writers Guild of Alberta, postmarked no later than December 31, 2010. An exception will be made for books published in December only if the WGA is notified of the late submission, in writing, in advance of the deadline.
  • Entries may be submitted by authors, publishers, or any interested parties.
  • Ineligible materials will not be returned.
  • Submissions must include a completed, signed entry form and five copies of each book for R. Ross Annett Award for Children’s Literature. Any additional categories entered thereafter (ie. The City Book Prizes – See website) require an additional three copies of the book (per category).
  • Submissions must be accompanied by a $25 fee per entry per category. Please make cheques payable to the Writers Guild of Alberta.
