Joanne Fitzgerald (1956-2011)

It is with deep sadness that we announce that after a long battle with cancer Joanne Fitzgerald passed away on August 14, 2011. Born in Montreal, Joanne knew from a very young age that she loved to draw. After graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick, she went on to illustrate a number of Canadian children’s books including Plain Noodles, Emily’s House, Ten Small Tales, Jacob’s Best Sisters, The Blue Hippopotamus and This is Me and Where I Am. In 1991, Joanne won the Governor General’s Literary Award for her illustrations in Teddy Jam’s Doctor Kiss Says Yes.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking friends of Joanne to make a donation to IBBY Canada. Donations made should be marked “Joanne Fitzgerald Fund” in the comments section of the IBBY Donate page.
