CUT, SEW, SCULPT, PLAY: The Art of Not Drawing Books

Join Canadian illustrators Barbara Reid, Thao Lam, Soyeon Kim, Lesley-Anne Greenand Kalpna Patel for a panel discussion with artists who bring the words of picture books alive by cutting, collaging, felting, sewing, quilting, or sculpting. What lead them to create in their mediums? How do they go about creating? What inspires them? What challenges them? What does their method of illustration lend to the telling of the story? These celebrated artists will each discuss their differing techniques, processes, styles and approaches to storytelling through art in a panel moderated by Karen Li, Editorial Director at Owlkids Books.

Barbara Reid is the author of over a dozen picture books and the illustrator of over twenty-five. Her illustrations are made by spreading and modelling plasticine to create images that are then photographed. Some of her books include Picture the Sky, Zoe’s Year, The Party, and Read Me A Book.

Thao Lam is the author and illustrator of Skunk on A String, Wallpaper and My Cat Looks Like My Dad. She uses coloured and textured papers to create collages for her illustrations.

Soyeon Kim is the illustrator of You Are Never Alone, Sukaq and the Raven, Wild Ideas: Let Nature Inspire Your Thinking, Is This Panama?and You Are Stardust. She specializes in work that merges fine sketching and painting techniques to produce three-dimensional dioramas.

Lesley-Anne Green is a textile artist who uses wool, thread, fabric and love. Her book Fox and Squirrel is the first in the Juniper Hollow series.

Kalpna Patel works with cut paper to create her art and illustrations. Her first book for children is Alis the Aviator by Danielle Metcalfe-Chenail.

This event is presented by the Friends of the Osborne. The Osborne Collection of Early Children’s Books was established in 1949 and is one of the foremost English-language children’s book collections.It has grown to consist of over 80,000 rare and modern children’s books.

Free. All are welcome.
