2016 Canadian Library Association Awards Announced

The Canadian Library Association/Association canadienne des bibliothèques (CLA/ACB), Canada’s largest national and broad-based library association, has announced the winners of its three annual awards. The awards are sponsored by Library Services Centre.

Winner: The Nest by Kenneth Oppel, illustrated by Jon Klassen, published by HarperCollins Canada.

The CLA Book of the Year for Children Award Jury also selected two Honour Books this year:

  • MiNRS by Kevin Sylvester (Margaret K. McElderry Books) and;
  • Young Man with Camera by Emil Sher, illustrated by David Wyman (Arthur A. Levine Books)

The CLA Book of the Year for Children Award Jury salutes all Canadian writers of children’s literature and their publishers for providing an exceptional collection of quality books for children with varied interests and reading abilities. Since its inception in 1947, the CLA Book of the Year Award for Children has been presented annually in recognition of excellence in children’s books written and published in Canada during the preceding year.

sidewalk2016 Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Illustrator’s Award

Winner: Sidewalk Flowers, by JonArno Lawson, illustrated by Sydney Smith, and published by Groundwood Books.

The Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Illustrator’s Award Jury also selected an Honour Book: The Bus Ride, illustrated and written by Marianne Dubuc, published by Kids Can Press.

Since its inception in 1971, the CLA Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Illustrator’s Award has been presented annually in recognition of excellence in English-language children’s books, published in Canada during the preceding year. The CLA Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Award Jury commends all Canadian illustrators of children’s books and their publishers for providing an exceptional collection of quality books for children.

scorpion2016 Book of the Year for Young Adult Award

Winner: The Scorpion Rules by Erin Bow, published by Simon & Schuster Canada.

The CLA Book of the Year for Young Adult Award Jury also selected an Honour Book this year: We are all Made of Molecules by Susin Nielsen (Tundra Books/Penguin Random House).

The CLA Young Adult Book Award Jury salutes all Canadian writers of young adult literature and their publishers for providing a remarkable selection of top quality books for young adults in Canada which cover topics of many interests and reading abilities, sparking and fostering the joy of reading in Canadian youth.  The Young Adult Book Award was established by the Young Adult Caucus of the Saskatchewan Library Association in 1980. The award recognizes an author of an outstanding Canadian English-language work of fiction (novel or collection of short stories) that appeals to young adults between the ages of 13 and 18.
