Biography
Nadia L. Hohn, B.A. (Hon.), B.Ed., M.Ed., M.F.A. is a multilingual, award-winning author of several books for young people, including A Likkle Miss Lou: How Jamaican Poet Louise Bennett Coverley Found Her Voice (Owlkids Books, 2019), Harriet Tubman: Freedom Fighter (HarperKids, 2018), and the Malaika series. Her first picture book, Malaika’s Costume (Groundwood Books, 2016) was the 2021 TD Grade One Book Giveaway and featured as a float in the 117th Original Santa Claus Parade. Nadia released two books in 2023: Malaika, Carnival Queen, her fourth book in the Malaika series, and her edited anthology, The Antiracist Kitchen: 21 Stories (and Recipes). Nadia is an “artivist” who wants to make sure that all young people see themselves in books. When she’s not lost in a story or concocting a tasty vegetarian dish, she is likely spending time in music and the arts or daydreaming about her next adventure. Nadia teaches elementary school and writing for children courses at post-secondary institutions in Toronto where she also lives.
Presentation Information:
Caribbean Playground—Malaika’s Costume, Malaika’s Winter Carnival or Malaika’s Surprise
(Kindergarten to Grade 4; Educator version also available)
Explore Caribbean songs, rhymes, and games that Malaika would learn and play in her schoolyard. This is an interactive, lively and musical workshop featuring a reading of Malaika’s Costume, musical instruments, and storytelling as well. Educators will gain Afro-Caribbean songs, rhymes, and games that you can share with your Kindergarten to Grade 4 students.
The Antiracist Kitchen: What if Talking about Racism was Easy
(Grades 4 and up)
What if talking about racism was as easy as baking a cake, cooking rice, or frying plantain? This presentation introduces the idea that our stories matter. This workshop will introduce audiences to authors and stories featured in the book The Antiracist Kitchen—their experiences, new vocabulary, and tools to fight racism. The goal is to create a safe environment for courageous conversations and mutual understanding while helping attendees to feel empowered with tools to fight racism. Food preparation with the group or beforehand can be included at an additional cost.
