Biography
Judy I. Lin, #1 New York Times-bestselling author of the Book of Tea duology (A Magic Steeped in Poison and A Venom Dark and Sweet), was born in Taiwan and immigrated to Canada with her family at a young age. She grew up with her nose in a book and loved to escape to imaginary worlds. She now works as an occupational therapist and still spends her nights dreaming up imaginary worlds of her own. She lives on the Canadian prairies with her husband and daughters.
Presentation Information:
Smaller workshops (5 - 20 participants) are available for student groups who are interested in creative writing, such as a workshop on writing scary stories. Contact for more information.
Workshop: Creating a Creative Roadmap (Grades 8 and up)
Judy moved to Canada as an immigrant. English was her second language. She never thought that being a writer was a viable career. In this presentation, Judy will discuss her writing origins, starting with her writing as a teen growing up in an immigrant household, how she had a career that is not writing-related, and how she came back to writing by way of poetry and fan fiction. This workshop will outline how Judy finds inspiration as a writer and how to encourage teens to build their own roadmap to support their creative pursuits.
*Preferred maximum group size is 50 students.
Presentation: Drawing Inspiration From History (Grades 8 and up)
Fantasy often involves creating fantastical worlds. How do authors pull inspiration from history to create a world that feels vivid and real? How do authors perform their research for their books and how do they put these details into their books? This presentation will discuss the origins of the Book of Tea duology, the brainstorming and research process in the creation of the work, and where inspirations can be found from their own personal histories as well.
*Preferred maximum group size is 50 students.
